FOREVER MACHINES FOR THE STEAM DECK
Install, in Desktop Mode (with the install script)

You have: Forever-Machines-Steam-Deck.zip

1. Get the zip onto the Deck (download it there in Desktop Mode, or USB stick, KDE Connect, scp).
Switch to Desktop Mode: STEAM button, Power, "Switch to Desktop".

2. Unzip it: right-click the zip, "Extract here" (or in Konsole: unzip Forever-Machines-Steam-Deck.zip).
A folder called Forever-Machines-Steam-Deck appears. The install script is inside it.

3. Open Konsole (the black terminal icon) and type these two lines
(change ~/Downloads if the folder is somewhere else):

       cd ~/Downloads/Forever-Machines-Steam-Deck
       sh install.sh

It says "Installed". Forever Machines is now in the application menu
(Sound & Video). Open it to try it.
The PDF in the same folder (Forever-Machines-Steam-Deck.pdf) shows every step.

4. TO PLAY IN GAME MODE: application menu, right-click Forever Machines,
   "Add to Steam".
Then, for its pictures in the library (instead of the empty grey ones), in Konsole:
       ~/Applications/ForeverMachines/add-artwork.sh

4. Back in Game Mode: Library > Non-Steam > Forever Machines > Controller icon >
Controller Layout > GAMEPAD (or "Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad").
Without this, Steam sends keyboard and mouse and the app sees no gamepad.

5. TOUCH IN GAME MODE (important): Steam turns the touch screen into a mouse in
Game Mode, so dragging and several fingers do not work. Switch it to real touch:
Forever Machines > Controller icon > Edit Layout > Action Sets > gear icon >
Add Always-On Command > System > "Touchscreen Native Support". Save.
(In Desktop Mode touch is real already.)

6. View + Menu (the two small buttons) shows the controls on screen.

YOUR OWN MACHINES (made in Desktop Mode, played in Game Mode)
Open forevermachines.net/workbench.html in Chrome on the Deck. Press "Link Steam Deck" once and
pick the folder ForeverMachines/machines in your home folder (the app creates it). From then on every
machine you add to your collection there is also saved in that folder, and the app has it in Game
Mode the next time it starts. Deleting it in the Workbench removes it there too. (Needs version 1.0.3 or newer.)

UPDATING TO A NEW VERSION OF THE APP
When there is one, a button appears at the top of the side panel. Tap it, in Game Mode or
Desktop Mode: the app downloads the new version, installs it and restarts by itself.
Your machines and settings are kept. (Version 1.0.1 and older cannot do this: install
the newest zip by hand once, as above, and from then on it updates itself.)

TO REMOVE IT
Delete the folder ~/Applications/ForeverMachines and the file
   ~/.local/share/applications/forever-machines.desktop

CONTROLS (View + Menu shows them on screen)
Touch works everywhere: tap buttons, drag knobs or tap the arrows beside them, drag lists
and the side panel to scroll them. With a controller there are two modes, and Menu switches
between them. A label top right says which. Y plays and stops in both.

NAVIGATE (the screen and menus)
D-pad jump to the next control (it is framed in amber)
A press; hold and move to drag a knob or the machine's screen
B back: close the help, the tour, a menu, the mixer or the grid
Left stick a free pointer (LT held: slower)
Right stick turn the knob or slider under the pointer
LB / RB previous / next machine
X the grid of every machine
   LT + D-pad up / down: tempo

PLAY (the Deck is an instrument, in the key and scale you set in the side panel)
   D-pad (left, down, right, up) notes 1-4 X, A, B notes 5-7
LT held chords (third and fifth with every note)
   RT held sustain pedal
LB / RB octave down / up
Left stick a finger on the machine's screen (amber): push it where you want to touch
Right stick a second finger (blue). Two thumbs, two fingers: bow, pluck, drag, hold

ALWAYS
Y play / stop Menu Navigate / Play View the mixer
   Steam + X Steam's on-screen keyboard
View + L3 a touch readout (counts the touches and any the browser took over): if the
touch screen misbehaves, switch it on and tell me what it says
Pressing the sticks does nothing on its own, so a click while steering changes nothing.

BACK GRIPS, TRACKPADS, GYRO (set in Steam: controller icon > Edit Layout)
A web page cannot see these, but Steam Input can turn them into keys the app knows:
Page Up / Page Down previous / next machine F1 lock F2 the grid
   F3 the mixer F4 the keyboard F5 random F6 play / stop
   F7 next theme F8 Navigate / Play
A good layout for the grips: L4 Page Up, R4 Page Down (machines), L5 F8 (Navigate /
Play), R5 F6 (play / stop). Left trackpad as a scroll wheel turns the knob under the
pointer; right trackpad as a mouse, gyro on while you touch it, for fine pointing.
Gyro to mouse moves the pointer; "Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad" makes the right
pad a mouse. The pointer follows a real mouse, a trackpad or the gyro.

IF SOMETHING IS WRONG
- Nothing happens when you press buttons: the controller layout is not Gamepad (step 4).
- "Permission denied" on ./install.sh: type chmod +x install.sh and run it again.
- No sound at first: press any button or touch the screen once.
- To start over: delete ~/.config/Forever Machines/ (this also forgets your own machines).

THE APP IS THE iOS / MAC APP, FOR LINUX
It is the same app screen: side panel with the machine picker, the onboard keyboard,
the mixer, the grid, locked machines playing together, themes, your own machines
(the + button) and the five app exclusives (901-905).

A MACHINE OF YOUR OWN, READY TO TRY
Break Box (made with Gemini) comes with this build as one of "your machines": No. 1001 in
the picker, with a star. It is removed like any of yours (the - button, click twice) and
then stays removed. More can be added with the + button.

NEW MACHINES BY THEMSELVES
Like the iPhone and Mac app: it carries the whole collection, works with no network,
and when there is a network it fetches newer machines from forevermachines.net at
launch, then every half hour. A new machine is born every Monday 06:00 (Stockholm
time). Open the app (or leave it open) and it arrives. All or nothing: a half-uploaded
machine never reaches you. What you make, your settings and your voice are kept in
~/.config/Forever Machines/.
Only a new version of the app itself (new screens) needs a new download.
